MusicBrainz Picard identifies songs from *.mp3 files and automatically fixes metadata

In my first attempt to switch from streaming to move back to listening to *.mp3 files, one of the issues I encountered was organization: how to standardize the metadata of the songs?

The solution I was familiar with at the time — manually editing each song — was impractical. Who has time for that?

In my second (and this time, successful) attempt in 2024, I came across a free app that is almost too good to be true, MusicBrainz Picard (Linux, macOS, Windows).

Picard connects to the vast database of MusicBrainz and identifies the songs you drag into the app. The accuracy is good, and in the rare cases where it fails, you can manually associate the file with the correct metadata entry.

Just drag the files, click the Check button, and if everything looks good with the metadata, click the Save button to save the changes.

You can also rename the music files based on the metadata and organize them on your disk.

It’s still not as convenient as streaming, but I found it practical enough to adopt this workflow into my routine. (After all, it’s not like I get new albums every day…)
