{"id":65476,"date":"2026-09-25T08:06:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T11:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/manualdousuario.net\/?p=65476"},"modified":"2026-09-25T08:06:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T11:06:16","slug":"ai-kde-plasma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/manualdousuario.net\/en\/ai-kde-plasma\/","title":{"rendered":"AI in KDE Plasma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of August, the results came out for a general resolution on the use of generative AI (LLMs) in Debian. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debian.org\/vote\/2026\/vote_002#texte\">Option 5 won<\/a>: \u201cResponsible use of generative AI.\u201d The outcome \u2014 you can probably guess \u2014 left a lot of people unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>This week, it was the KDE project&#8217;s turn to end up in the crossfire while trying to propose a policy on the use (or non-use) of AI in its code. Tempers flared when ~the internet discovered that one of the talks at Akademy, the project&#8217;s annual event, proposed \u201ca lovable, sovereign, AI-native KDE,\u201d pitched by two people who had been involved in KDE development in the past, but no longer are.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Both attempts to draft the policy fell apart, and at the moment there&#8217;s no new proposal under discussion.<\/p>\n<p>On his blog, Nate Graham, one of the project&#8217;s most active developers and CEO of Techpaladin Software, a company that funds several parts of KDE, <a href=\"https:\/\/pointieststick.com\/2026\/09\/23\/kde-and-ai-and-you-and-me\/\">gave a detailed and thoughtful rundown<\/a> of the situation. The initial drafts of the AI policy were written by him.<\/p>\n<p>Nate summed it up like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A bunch of people mostly outside of KDE who disapprove of LLM usage derailed KDE\u2019s attempt to add restrictions to LLM usage.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, that\u2019s where we\u2019re at in the state of online discourse around AI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who&#8217;s right? Who&#8217;s wrong? I don&#8217;t know. I just have a few thoughts that came to mind while reading about it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What&#8217;s at stake is the use of AI in developing KDE applications, not in the applications themselves. Nothing like Copilot on Windows&nbsp;11 or <a href=\"https:\/\/manualdousuario.net\/en\/macos-golden-gate-ios-27-review\/\">Apple&nbsp;Intelligence on macOS&nbsp;27<\/a> was even on the table.<\/li>\n<li>KDE developers, <a href=\"https:\/\/pointieststick.com\/2026\/09\/23\/kde-and-ai-and-you-and-me\/comment-page-1\/#comment-41093\">in Nate&#8217;s words<\/a>, are opposed to adopting the vibe coding \u201cmethodology.\u201d The policy, still according to him, is meant to provide grounds for rejecting poor contributions with clear evidence of being AI-generated.<\/li>\n<li>Maybe the only point where I found myself disagreeing with his post was regarding the weight given to the opinions of non-code-contributors, which Nate suggests should be (or ought to be) smaller. The presence of generative AI \u2014 something he himself acknowledges \u2014 goes well beyond practical or code-related concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Judging by the state of the commercial alternatives, I still sense there&#8217;s a fear of KDE&nbsp;Plasma potentially being wrecked by the possible use of code generators.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend reading the post and the comments.
